Workflow built around your characters — not our prose
"The character became more real than anything I'd written about them in a year of drafting."— Johnson Liu, founder — written deep in his own Silk Road novel
Jobs to be done

Writers open Khotan when
they're stuck on a character.

Not to generate prose — other tools do that. Khotan is for the moments when you need to know who your character actually is, not who you assumed they were.

👂
When you need to…

Hear the voice you've been guessing at

You've been writing your character's dialogue for three chapters but it still sounds like you. Khotan lets you meet them — really meet them — until their real patterns emerge.

"Why are you lying to him?" → The character's answer told me everything I'd been writing wrong.
When you need to…

Test a character under pressure before you write the scene

Drop your character into a confrontation, a confession, an impossible choice. See how they actually respond — before you commit it to the manuscript.

"Would you betray your brother to save yourself?" → I found out in 30 seconds what six drafts hadn't told me.
🔁
When you need to…

Keep a character consistent across 300 pages

Every writer knows the feeling: chapter 14 contradicts chapter 3. Your character's memory engine tracks what's been established and flags the contradictions before your editor does.

"In chapter 4 she said she never learned to ride. Now she accepted a horse." → Flag before it ships.
How we compare

Character development is a
distinct workflow. Own it.

How it works

Three steps. Then a person you can argue with.

1

Describe

A sentence, a name, a contradiction. The richer the description, the sharper the character. Use the built-in "Enrich" tool to expand a rough note into a full character bible.

"A public letter-writer in a harbor town — thirty years of other people's love and bad news. Knows every secret on the street. Has never once received a letter himself…"
2

Argue

Push them. Ask why they lied. Contradict their stated belief. Drop them into a scene with another character. The resistance is the data.

"Why didn't you tell your brother?" → "Because if I had, he would have done what I needed to do myself."
3

Keep & share

Save the lines that crack you open. Export the conversation to your manuscript. Share the character with a co-writer. Every session builds the character's memory.

Where it earns its keep

The character becomes more real
than the draft you've lived in for years.

Three years into a draft, you've been writing the version of your protagonist you wish she was. Ask her "why do you avoid your mother?" — and hear her real voice for the first time. Unsettling. Exactly right.

For novelists deep in a draft
Meet the character before you revise the chapter

Twelve recurring characters, twenty-two episodes, and every writer in the room hears the voice differently. One canonical source of truth per character — meet them before anyone writes the scene.

For writers' rooms
Consistent voice across a whole season

Run one character through fifty scenarios in an afternoon — test their reactions, find the edges of their personality, know who they are before you write a single line of barks.

For game narrative designers
Prototype NPCs at the speed of conversation
What's built in

The full character development
workflow, in one place.

01 · Core

Character chat

Full streaming conversation with any character you describe. The AI stays completely in-voice — no breaking character, no disclaimers, no suggestions to "consider the impact." Dark, complex, intimate — handled.

02 · Memory

Narrative memory engine

Every established fact — her relationship with her brother, the year she stopped trusting doctors — is tracked across sessions. Ask your character what's changed since your first conversation. Get a reckoning, not a summary.

03 · Tools

Enrich + Suggest

Paste a rough note — "detective, divorced, tired" — and Enrich expands it into a full character bible. Suggest generates four questions specific to your character that will unlock them fastest.

04 · Workflow

Export + Share

Export any conversation as Markdown, or share a character link so your co-writer, editor, or producer can talk to them directly. No account required to read — only to talk back.

Khotan Bodies

Print your character as a 3D figurine. Tap the NFC base with your phone — the body remembers who it is and picks the conversation up. Two owners' characters can meet agent-to-agent first.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Is this just ChatGPT with a costume? +
No. ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant. Khotan is purpose-built for character development: it maintains cross-session character memory, tracks established facts, flags inconsistencies, and never breaks character. It also accepts complex fiction that general-purpose models refuse. The system prompt is engineered specifically to surface authentic character voice — not to be helpful.
Will you train on my characters or conversations? +
No — we never train any model on your characters, your writing, or your conversations, ours or anyone else's. Your IP is yours; it's in our terms, and the whole point of Khotan is that you own your characters. The one thing we do — on by default, one toggle to switch off in Settings — is learn from anonymized, de-identified patterns of which kinds of questions open a character up. Never your characters' words or content, nothing that could identify you or reproduce your work (see our privacy policy). That craft signal is what sharpens the question suggestions for everyone.
What's a Character Card? +
Your character saved as a portable file (.json) — their profile plus every fact they've established across your conversations. Export it to back up or share; import one to bring a character in. It's an open format, so your characters are always yours to take anywhere.
What kind of fiction does this handle? Is there a content filter? +
Khotan is designed for adult writers working on serious fiction. This means it accepts morally complex, dark, violent, and intimate material that general AI assistants routinely refuse. The system prompt explicitly forbids safety disclaimers and content warnings — you are a writer, not a liability. We do not allow content involving minors in sexual contexts, or content intended to facilitate real-world harm.
Does the character remember our previous conversations? +
Yes — for signed-in users. Every conversation with a character is saved. The Narrative Memory Engine tracks what's been established across sessions: facts, contradictions resolved, truths admitted. You can ask your character "what's changed since we first talked?" and they'll answer in-voice. This cross-draft persistence is the feature no other tool has built.
Can I use this for screenwriting / game writing / brand work? +
Yes. The core functionality — describe a character, talk to them, export the conversation — works identically for novelists, screenwriters, game narrative designers, playwrights, and ad creatives building brand personas. The Pro tier adds Final Draft and Fountain export specifically for screenwriters. Game studios can use the API (coming soon) to power dynamic NPC dialogue.
What is Khotan Bodies? +
Bodies is Khotan's physical product line: your character becomes a 3D-printed figurine with an NFC base. Tap with your phone and the conversation picks back up — the body remembers who it is. An optional voice module lets it speak back. Two owners' characters can also meet agent-to-agent first, then suggest the humans connect. First drop coming to the waitlist.
