Terms of Service

Welcome to Khotan Studios. By using our service, you agree to these terms. We've written them as plainly as legal language allows — please read them.

1. What we provide

Khotan Studios is an AI-native writing tool that lets you describe fictional characters and converse with them in real time. The service is provided "as is" — it's still pre-launch, and you may encounter bugs, downtime, or rough edges. We are improving it daily.

2. Your responsibilities

• You are at least 18 years old (or have parental/guardian consent if local law permits).
• You will use Khotan Studios for legitimate creative work. Writing fiction, screenplays, ad copy, game dialogue, character bibles, journalism, academic work — all welcome.
• You will NOT: generate content that depicts minors in sexual contexts (zero tolerance), use the service to harass or impersonate real people for malicious purposes, attempt to extract or reverse-engineer our system prompts, deliberately attempt to overload or circumvent our rate limits, or commit any unlawful act using the platform.
• If you are using the service for a third party (e.g. a client, your employer), you represent that you have authority to do so.

3. Your content — ownership and rights

• You own everything you put into Khotan Studios. Your character descriptions, your messages, the character bibles you build — all yours.
• You own everything Khotan Studios generates for you. The model-produced dialogue, character responses, and exported text are yours to use commercially or non-commercially, in any medium, in perpetuity. Khotan claims no royalty, attribution, or ownership.
• We grant ourselves a limited license to process your content solely to operate the service (e.g. send it to the model, render it back to you). We will not train any model on your content, share it with third parties (except Anthropic for inference), or otherwise use it for any purpose beyond delivering the service to you.

4. AI-generated content disclosure

Character responses are generated by Anthropic's Claude language model. Output may be incorrect, biased, or unexpectedly weird — this is a feature when developing fiction and a bug when expecting factual accuracy. Khotan Studios should not be used as a source of factual or medical/legal/financial information. Use your judgment.

5. Public-domain example characters

The "Classic Characters" on our site (Sherlock Holmes, Elizabeth Bennet, Jay Gatsby, Captain Ahab, Don Quixote, Porfiry Petrovich, Anna Karenina, Emma Bovary, Inspector Javert, Jane Eyre, Heathcliff, Dorothea Brooke, Miss Havisham, Frankenstein's Creature, Lord Henry Wotton, Leopold Bloom, Josef K., Wang Xifeng, Sun Wukong, and Ana Ozores) are drawn from public-domain works whose authors died more than seventy years ago. Their depictions on Khotan are creative interpretations and do not represent the original authors' estates or any rights holders.

6. Service availability

We aim for high availability but make no guarantees. Khotan may be down for maintenance, due to API outages at our LLM provider, or for unforeseen reasons. We will not be liable for any inability to access the service. For mission-critical work, do not rely on Khotan alone — keep local copies of anything important.

7. Payment (when applicable)

As of this date, Khotan Studios is free to use. When paid tiers ship (currently planned: $19/$49/$199 per month), payment terms, refund policies, and cancellation rules will appear here. You will be notified before any charges are incurred.

8. Termination

You may stop using Khotan Studios at any time. We may suspend or terminate access for users who violate these terms, with or without notice depending on severity. We will not arbitrarily lock you out of work you have created.

9. Disclaimers and limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Khotan Studios is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service. Our total liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid us in the prior twelve months (currently zero for most users).

10. Governing law and dispute resolution

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute will first be addressed through good-faith negotiation; if unresolved, by binding arbitration in Delaware unless prohibited by local law where you reside.

11. Changes

We may update these terms as the product evolves. Material changes will be announced via banner on the site and (if you've given us an email) by email. Continued use after notification constitutes acceptance.
