Privacy Policy

Khotan Studios, Inc. ("Khotan", "we", "us") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We wrote this in plain English because most writers we know hate boilerplate.

What we collect

• Character descriptions and conversations you create. When you describe a character and chat with them, we receive your text and the resulting responses through our backend.
• Technical metadata. Browser type, IP address, and basic usage logs (rate-limiting, error tracking). No browser fingerprinting beyond what is required to serve the page.
• Email address (only if you provide one). If you join the waitlist or sign up for an account when available, we store your email to contact you about Khotan Studios.
• We do NOT collect: your name, location, payment information until you actively purchase, social-media handles, or any data we have not explicitly asked you for.

What we do with what we collect

• Provide the service. Your character descriptions and messages are sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate responses. Anthropic processes them under their own privacy and data-retention terms — see Anthropic's Privacy Policy.
• Operate, debug, and improve the platform. Aggregated, de-identified usage data informs feature decisions.
• Communicate with you about updates, security, and (only if you opt in) product news.

What we explicitly do NOT do

• We do not train any AI model on your characters, your writing, or your conversations. Your fictional work is yours. The one exception, which you control: with your consent — on by default, off anytime in Settings — we record anonymized, de-identified signals about which kinds of questions tend to elicit a character revelation. These hold no character content, no conversation text, and no identifiers; they cannot reproduce your work or be traced to you, and they only improve our question suggestions.
• We do not sell, rent, or share your content with third parties except (a) Anthropic, solely to generate model responses, and (b) infrastructure providers (e.g. Vercel hosting) solely to operate the service. None of these parties may train models on your content.
• We do not surveil your sessions or read your characters for any purpose other than debugging — and only when you have reported an issue.

Data retention

For users without an account, your characters and conversations live only in your browser and are lost when you close the tab. If you create an account, they are saved in our database so you can resume them across sessions; you can delete all your data at any time from your account panel ("Delete all my data"), and deletion is permanent.

Cookies and tracking

We use a minimum of cookies — only what is required for session continuity. We do not use third-party advertising trackers, Facebook Pixel, or similar surveillance tools.

Children

Khotan Studios is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under that age. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Your IP rights

Everything you write into Khotan Studios — descriptions, dialogue, character bibles — remains yours. We claim no ownership over your creative work. The model-generated text, derived from your input, is also yours to use however you wish (commercial fiction, screenplay, manuscript, etc.).

International users

Khotan Studios is operated from the United States. By using the service, you consent to your information being processed in the United States. For users in the EU/UK, we honor GDPR rights to access, correction, deletion, and portability — contact us to exercise these rights.

Changes

We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be announced via banner on the site and (if you've given us an email) by email. Continued use after notification constitutes acceptance.
